Always complete transactions face-to-face, where possible. Meet in
a well-lit public place, and if you aren`t able to take someone with
you, let people know exactly where you are going.
If you are happy to complete the transaction without meeting, make
sure to use a secure method of payment, like Paypal, for example.
Avoid escrow services such as Western Union. These transactions are
very difficult to trace and are often used by fraudsters. Be wary
if a seller is encouraging you to pay this way.
Do not carry large amounts of cash. If you are buying an expensive
item, it is reasonable to want to view the item first of all, then
ask the seller to accompany you to the bank to complete the payment.
Check that you are happy with the item before making payment, and
vice versa, do not hand over an item until you have received payment
Use your common sense. If something seems too good to be true, it
probably is. An item that looks to be too cheap may not be all that
it seems - if your gut instinct tells you that something isn`t quite
right, walk away.
Be wary of an international buyer wanting to purchase an item that
would be readily available to them at home. Often the cost of
shipping this item would be more than the value of the item itself.
Some scams involve them sending payment for much more than the cost
of the item and shipping. You send the item along with a refund of
the difference in costs and before you know it, the payment they
have sent is reversed. You no longer have your item or the money
that you have refunded to them. Bad times.
Look out for fake ads, scammers may copy genuine ads from other
classified sites using the same description and images. They may
try to lure you with a price much lower than comparable items for
sale on the site, and when you show any interest make up claims that
they are travelling but will arrange delivery upon receipt of
payment. More often than not, the item will never arrive and the
seller will no longer be contactable.
ALWAYS view a rental property before paying any types of deposits or
handing over identification documents. Some scammers will post
copies of genuine ads and then make excuses as to why you can`t view
the property before making a payment or supplying identification
documents. It may turn out that the property doesn`t even belong
to the advertiser and you lose your money or your documents are used
to commit identity theft.
