Jookit is a great platform to buy and sell locally, with thousands of people browsing daily. The vast majority of Jookit users will have positive experiences, but we have compiled some of our top tips on how to do this safely and effectively, avoiding anything that appears unscrupulous.
Be aware of fraudulent ads. We try our very best to intercept the crooks, but sometimes they manage to slip through the net. There are certain tell-tale signs to look out for.
If an item seems far too cheap, it`s most likely been posted by a fraudster trying to get you to part with your cash. Heard the saying "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is"? As tempting as it may be to try to get a bargain, bear this in mind if you see something that is way below the market value.
Avoid using money transfer services or ESCROW services to pay for goods that you haven`t received. These are the preferred tools of fraudsters as the transactions are almost untraceable if problems later arise.
Try to carry out any transactions face-to-face, this is the most straightforward way of avoiding the scammers.
Whether buying or selling, if you are meeting a stranger, meet in a well-lit, busy place, let people know where you are going, or even better, bring someone with you.
Don`t carry large sums of money. If you are considering buying something expensive (like a car, for example), a reputable seller won`t expect you to pay for it there and then. Have a look at it and make arrangements to pay the seller by some other means - bank transfer or bankers draft etc.
Are your contact details correct? Make sure that you have included a phone number so that prospective buyers can get in touch as easily as possible.
Check the price. Compare the price you have asked to that of similar items to see if yours looks like good value.
Have you included photos? An item with good photos will generate up to 4 x as many views as an ad without any images. Make sure your photos are clear, the right way round, and that the background is free from clutter.
Is there something special about your item? Is it in particularly good condition? Is it a limited edition or highly sought after item? Let people know! Make sure that you include any important information about what you are selling in the description - it could make a big difference in how quickly you sell it, or how much someone is willing to pay for it.
Is it in the correct category? If you aren`t exactly sure which category to place your ad, or think it could fit into two, create an ad in all relevant categories.
Shop around - compare lots of similar items to see which is the best value or in the best condition - feel free to contact the seller to request more photos etc.
Ask the seller if you can view the item. You wouldn`t buy something from a shop without seeing it first, so don`t feel bad about having a good look at it in person. If it isn`t what you`d expected, don`t feel obliged to buy it.
Certain items are more likely to be offered for sale, fraudulently. Pay special attention if you are buying concert or events tickets. Check that they aren`t counterfeit, and also that there are no special terms in the small print forbidding re-sale.
If buying a pet, always go local. If possible, get your pet from a seller or breeder in your area. Visit the pet and inspect it before you hand over any cash. Legitimate breeders will be happy to let you play with your puppy or kitten first, and they`ll be helpful about answering any questions or concerns. In fact, many real breeders prefer to screen potential buyers to make sure their animals will go to a loving, responsible home. It`s a huge red flag if someone selling a pet won`t let you meet it first. Alarm bells should ring if a seller asks you to send them money without ever having seen the animal.
